How to be an herbalist every day and every night, living in the world.  Where to start , where to look and how to keep learning herbalism.  What is worth your time and investment.  How to  learn tree identification, how to lead a tree walk. make a tonic herbal formula or a simple herb tea from the tree you can see right now, build muscle or how pick your wild food are all part of the realm of herbalism.  Herbalism honors shamanic journeys as well as scientific research and the countless folk traditions from around the planet.  Local is important, no matter where plant of human origins. Living ordinary life as an herbalist involves physical, mental and spiritual discipline.

Field and forest, trail and city sidewalk - all are part of the world of medicinal herbs and trees. The key is learning to recognize them in all these places.

Lifelong herbal study.  My family taught me the plants in the mountains in North Carolina and in the swamps and prairies of rural north Florida.  I’ve studied Western-European herbal traditions, rural Southern USA folkways, Ayurveda and traditional Chinese herbal lore and have been a working herbalist for 40 years. Each of us has our own place and path in herbalism. This world needs more community herbalists.

Scientific research and folk traditions all matter. Currently, I am focused on teaching and mentoring others to be herbalists, and on exploring more and more local wild foods and medicinal plants. Tree medicine, herbal formulation, food and local plants are my current focus.
